Half or 2011 has come and gone!

WOW, it's June 19, 2011! Father's Day! Where did the first half of the year go? I remember my Mom often told me that as we grow older the days, weeks, months, and years tend to fly by. Now I was in school at the time and could only think of when is SUMMER going to get here!!!

Now, I think.... man.... where did SUMMER GO!!!!

We've been busy bee's around here. summer trips for my boys, winding down my day job; and contemplating what will come next! In the meantime, I've been having sooo much fun with metal clay and creating my handcrafted jewelry. Hopefully with more time on my hands, I should be able to focus on promoting my jewelry!!

I just set up a new computer, so I'm still loading some of my pictures of my latest items, so as soon as I get that done, I'll load some of them here.

My next project will be cleaning & reorganizing my studio, which looks like a hurricane, tornado or something (maybe ME!!!) flew through it!!! I've had family over from out-of-town and am thoroughly enjoying my time with them.

We are preparing for a whirlwind trip through Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and back within the next month and am sooo excited.

Well.... my morning coffee is calling me..... so hopefully my next post will be sooner than 6 months!

Using Cake Decorating Techniques to make jewelry!

WOW, I just read a wonderful article on one of my favorite sites Tonya Davidson (of www.wholelottawhimsy.com) has a blog where she introduces projects from Masters of Metal Clay.

I have been so impressed with the work of Barbara Becker Simon and this article just solidifies my admiration.

In this project, Barbara mentions applying a technique she learned from a cake decorating class she took years ago to decorate a metal clay bead using a syringe! What a great idea! I can't wait to sign up for a cake decorating class so I can master the syringe technique!

Man, where did the last 6 weeks go? Not sure, but I do know I'll never get them back! I've been very busy, with my real daytime job, as well as with my handcrafted jewelry business.

We have started a group (Louisiana PMC Guild Chapter) , and we've been challenging each other with projects! I've also just completed a custom order that included a shark's tooth and a chunk of turquoise! I still have more polishing to do and must complete the necklace, but the pendant is done! check it out below!

Talk about having to step out of my comfort zone!!! it's been fantastic!

Here's to all the artisans, friends and family I've neglected since my last post!!!

I was pleasantly surprised when I received an email that I would be this week's featured artisan for Share the Love -Blogger's Unite! Not one to 'toot' my own horn!! (although I am smiling as I write this!) I'm quite excited today!

First, for being chosen as the Featured Artisan, I want to thank my dear friend Anne, (aka Made it by Oakley) who works diligently in getting us all recognized and assisting with promoting our shops through many venues, one being Share the Love-Bloggers Unite, Onfireforhandmade, the Gift Shop Handmade just to name a few!

Secondly, I just received an other email this morning as a preclude to the 'official' letter that will be mailed this week, informing me that my application to the Louisiana Crafts Guild has been accepted! To even be considered you have to submit pictures with your application and then if they like those, you have to submit a minimum of 5 actual samples of your work for them to look at, touch and examine! You can learn more about the Guild on their website, but I wanted to share what is on their 'about us' page

"The Louisiana Crafts Guild is an organization of juried Fine Crafts Artisans located throughout the state of Louisiana and the Southern Region of the United States. Because of our stringent jury requirements and dedication to excellence in fine craft, only three out of every ten applicants is approved for membership......."

What an honor! The email continued to say that the committee members thought my work was very creative, innovative and fresh! WOW, now the pressure is on!!!!

Some of you may be wondering (especially those who have known me for years) how in the world I ever got into being a handcrafted jewelry artisan. Well here's my brief story!

I’m the fourth of five children, and our Mother always said we each have a special gift or talent. Hers was her ‘green thumb’! She loved to garden (flower & vegetable) in her back yard! My talent is organization while I thought my two sisters were the only creative or artistic ones! I’ve been attempting some sort of art or craft since I was a very young girl. I think I sewed my first apron for a 4-H project when I was in elementary school and got an honorable mention award!

I’ve experimented with all sorts of arts and crafts, from sewing, to crocheting and quilting, to cross stitching, to smocking, to stained glass. I’ve done papier-mâché ornaments and even attempted acrylic painting! But I never pursued these for very long because I didn’t feel any of the mediums truly connected to my artistic self or even expressed my personal creativity. My artistic self was dormant and waiting to be expressed.

So the search continued until 2007, when I attended an introductory class creating jewelry using silver metal clay taught by a local artist. This was an instant love affair! I found my artistic voice. I was hooked, and have never looked back. That was over 3 years ago!

I’m not formally trained as a jeweler. My creativity, long dormant, began to evolve, filling that small void in my completeness! The fundamental need to express myself using my God given gift or talent is blossomed.

Most of my creations have metal clay as its focal point. Metal clay is a clay-like medium used to make jewelry, beads and small sculpture. It consists of very small particles of metals, such as silver, bronze, copper, gold or platinum, mixed with an organic binder and water. Metal clay can be shaped and textured just like any soft clay, by hand or using moulds. After drying, it can be fired in a variety of ways including a kiln, or with a handheld gas torch. The binder burns away, leaving the pure, sintered metal.

Hearts of Hospice

Exciting News!! I was contacted by our local Hospice Foundation, to submit some of my jewelry for their silent auction that is held at their Kick-off Fundraiser where they are selling raffle tickets for a new truck or a car. I donated a full set of jewelry (necklace, bracelet and earrings) for the silent auction scheduled for this Sunday March 14, 2010.

When I went to their website, their logo was two hands in the shape of a heart, and since I had just completed the contemporary heart design from a few posts back, I decided to do a similar design out of silver metal clay, and incorporate freshwater pearls. I used the same texture on the earrings, and finished the bracelet with sterling silver oval beads and toggle. And here is the result.

My Heart's Content

This is one of my latest creations that I've added to my online shop! It's a contemporary heart created from Precious Metal Clay (PMC). I was unable to finish in time for Valentines Day, so I decided to post it as 'My Heart's Content'!.

I love hearts of all shapes and sizes and the inspiration for this piece came from a magazine article that I read a couple of months back, and I kept a picture from that article in my 'inspiration binder', just knowing that some day I would create a heart pendant from metal clay that would not be in the usual 'cookie cutter' form.

It took me a while to determine what I wanted to use in order to drape or wrap my clay around in order to create the contemporary feel for my pendant that I was trying to accomplish. I love the fact that there is texture only on one side. It adds a certain depth or dimension to the piece. Anyway I'm pleased with the result and hope you enjoy viewing this piece and my other pieces in my online shop KP Designs

I've just created a jewelry item and haven't posted it to my online shop yet. One thing I love about this piece is that the two pieces were created for different reasons, and I never thought to put them together until I was cleaning my studio and placed them to the side one on top of the other!

When I returned to my studio a couple of days later, I noticed how well they worked together and had to come up with a way to join them into one piece.

I first had to drill a hole in the bottom piece, which was quite a task until I realized that my drill bit was dull!!! duh!!! I'm such a blond sometimes!!

Anyway once I drilled the hole and used 24 gauge copper wire to wrap the two together and voila! here's the result.

Okay I bit the bullet

I have no idea what to do now that I've joined the blogging world!!! My fellow online jewelry artisan friend, London and her precious Dolly has inspired me to get going on the blogging circuit.

Well its 2010, and I'm not sure what to think about it.... By the 2nd day of the year we had already called out the plumber to repair a broken pipe in my laundry room & my 6 week old grandbaby began 'cooing' when I spoke with him, I just hate that he lives 9 hours away!!

I also thought that the 5th was on Wednesday all day yesterday until my dog groomer called to ask where our Shitzu Poodle Mix dog, McGruff, was, he had an appointment on Jan 5th, (which was Tuesday not Wednesday!!!) .
